AGAIN : He did it again, just like "The Red Fox Clan", the story ends abruptly in the middle of the climax, with absolutely nothing resolved. It also ruins the last few chapters for me, because I knew the story couldn't possibly resolve and it was going to be another to be continued book. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Bookfanatic -- MASSIVE CLIFFHANGER! : Great story, as always, but it ends in a CLIFFHANGER, for which I’ve deducted a star. I despise authors who end their books in cliffhangers. It’s a cheap trick to get the reader to buy the next book, and frankly, Mr. Flanagan, you’re better than that. It’s unnecessary for you to cheat your readers with a cliffhanger. Your stories are wonderful, and we’re going to buy your next book regardless. So why would you pull a stunt like that? If the story is too big to fit in one book, at least close the narrative on a reasonable ending, leaving threads to be continued. Or just write a bigger book. I think the success of the Harry Potter books proves that kids will read longer stories. You disappoint me, and my enjoyment of the story has been tarnished. Sad. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Charrlie -- Cliff Hanger-the tool of a terrible writer : John Flanagan is an amazing writer, this makes understanding his 3rd use of a cliffhanger baffling. The first time I blamed the publisher, the second time I was just disappointed. This third time I remove him from my list of instant purchases. I will wait for reviews in the future & if they include cliffhanger warnings I will no longer purchase. The story itself was boring and unimaginative, not like Flanagan at all. Her mother had fought her being put into danger but her father felt that it was the best thing he could have done to turn his daughter into the resourceful and amazing person she had become. Now, the sum of those moments began to show itself as she rushed towards her final acceptance as a ranger for the king, each moment and each adventure becomes one to remember. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sara Livingstone -- Awesome as usual but... : Ugh, another "to be continued". I truly hate that. I'd rather wait and read the whole thing at once. I wouldn't even mind paying double, but I am really bummed that I have to wait however long it takes for the rest of the book to be released to find out what happens. It's very disappointing. Having said that, I give it 5 stars anyway because I love what I've read so far! The Ranger books (Ranger's Apprentice books and The Royal Ranger books) are my favorite of Mr. Flanagan's series. Although the Brotherband series is also fantastic. This book sees the return of Maddie, Will, Horace, and Halt! I won't give anything away... I'll just say this book was great, as usual, and I can't wait for part 2. I hope we don't have to wait too long! ( Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2020 )
