  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Yvonne M -- An Excellent Book About fifteen Remarkable People : In Black Leaders in the Civil Rights Movement, Glenda Armand introduces readers to the Civil Rights Movement through stories about some of the people who were critical to it. The biographies are brief and the pace is quick, delving into each person’s history and then moving on to their contributions. Despite the relative brevity, the historical context and personal information provided make each person come alive for the reader. Connections are made between the different people featured, building an ever increasing view into that period of time. For those who want to know more, each story is followed by a bit of historically relevant information and a suggestion for additional reading. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from notes from the Inkwell -- Invaluable! : to adults seeking a rich and full primer course on civil rights and civic engagement that benefits the whole society. Armand writes with clear-eyed appreciation for the intellect, courage, and commitment each leader brought to bear on the organized movements that challenged the status quo in American culture as well as the injustices of the law and the lawbreakers. Her polished descriptions shine with examples of their work against racism and their commitment to justice and nonviolence. She uses primary resources that allow readers to feel their passion and understand their practices and positions. An additional "Did You Know?" section in each biography offers extra elements of easy-to-remember story details. An "Explore More" section offers superb suggestions for further reading and for actual and virtual field trips. A glossary and an extensive list of resources add to the usefulness of this excellent and affordable volume--and the brilliant illustrations by Maria Perera help readers commit the faces of these heroes to memory. This reviewer received a complimentary advance review copy of this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2021 )
